Students are learning different ways to show a number using addition and subtraction.
Here are some ways that you can show a number:
At Home:
-practice making ways to show a number using the ideas above and other ways that are discovered through practice
-practice counting to 100 by ones and tens
-practice writing numbers 0-20 daily

Phonics:
This week, students learned about FLOSS words.
"Immediately after one short vowel, at the end of one short word, if it says /f/, /l/, /s/, or /z/ DOUBLE IT! Yippee!!"

Writing:
This week we continued working on OPINION writing using the format below.
1. Write your opinion.
I like.... My favorite..... I would....
2. Tell WHY? (1-2 reasons)

At Home:
-Read from bag of books daily, having book discussions.
-When possible, practice writing daily (this can be in a journal, on loose paper, etc.).
-Practice sight words (these are on activity handouts that are sent home in your child's folder).

- listening to and participating in book discussions
- retelling a story (setting, characters, plot)
- identifying different types of stories as fiction or non-fiction
- poems
Phonics:
This week, students learned about FLOSS words.

Here are some skills that we have learned in Phonics:
- short and long vowels (a, e, i, o, u)
- sneaky y (as a vowel...At the end of short words, y says "i". At the end of long words (2-syllable), y says "e".
- magic e
- digraphs/h brothers (th, sh, ch, wh)
- suffix -s and suffix -es
- welded sounds -am -an
- FLOSS rule
We will continue to work on these word skills through review and practice.
